Metal Weight Calculator

Estimate the weight of plate, bar, tube and angle across common engineering metals. Useful for freight, handling and material costing. Switch between US and metric units.

How it works

Weight is volume multiplied by material density. The calculator computes the cross-sectional geometry of the shape you choose, multiplies by length and quantity, then applies the density of the selected metal. Tube and square-tube figures use the wall thickness to subtract the hollow center. Angle uses the standard leg-plus-leg-minus-thickness section area, which is a close approximation for hot-rolled and laser-formed angle.

Material densities used

Materiallb/in³g/cm³
Carbon steel (A36 / mild)0.28367.85
Stainless steel 3040.2898.00
Stainless steel 3160.2898.00
Aluminum 60610.09752.70
Galvanized steel0.28367.85
Copper0.3238.94
Brass (C260)0.3078.50
Estimates are theoretical weights based on nominal dimensions and standard densities. Actual weight varies with mill tolerance, alloy grade and coating. For certified weights, confirm against the specific material.
